United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has appointed Gianluca Rampolla del Tindaro of Italy as the UN Resident Coordinator in Egypt, with the approval of the Egyptian government. He began his new duties on 4 October.

Rampolla del Tindaro comes to the post with more than 25 years of professional experience spanning development cooperation, humanitarian assistance, and peacebuilding. His most recent assignment was as UN Resident Coordinator in Venezuela, where he simultaneously served as Humanitarian Coordinator. In that capacity, he led UN efforts to advance sustainable development, foster partnerships and dialogue, mobilize expertise and resources across the UN system, and coordinate support for vulnerable populations affected by humanitarian challenges.

Prior to Venezuela, he served as UN Resident Coordinator in Papua New Guinea, where he led the UN country team in support of national development priorities, strengthened partnerships, and promoted a coherent UN approach to sustainable development and peacebuilding.

His career within the United Nations has spanned several regions and institutional roles. These include Chief Political Affairs Officer at the UN Regional Office for Central Africa in Libreville, Gabon; Chief of Office of the Assistant Secretary-General for Peacebuilding Support; an earlier posting at the Department of Political Affairs in New York; Head of the Office of the UN Resident Coordinator in the United Republic of Tanzania; and Chief Technical Adviser with the United Nations Development Programme in Rwanda.

Before joining the UN, Rampolla del Tindaro worked with the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, with assignments in the Western Balkans and Central Asia.

He holds a master's degree in international affairs from the London School of Economics in the United Kingdom.
