Turkey's application to become an Associate Observer to the Ibero-American Conference was accepted at the Meeting of Ibero-American Foreign Ministers held during the High-Level Week of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, Turkey's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on 28 September 2026.

In its press release, the Ministry welcomed the decision and extended thanks to all member states of the conference, singling out Spain — the current Chair of the Ibero-American Conference — and the Ibero-American Secretariat for their roles in facilitating the outcome.

As a result of the newly assumed status, Turkey will participate as an Associate Observer at the 30th Ibero-American Conference Summit, scheduled to be hosted by Spain in Madrid on 4–5 November 2026. The Ministry stated that Turkey intends to use this platform to deepen cooperation with Ibero-American Conference members, framing the move within what it described as its multidimensional policy toward the Latin American and Caribbean region.

The Ibero-American Conference groups Spain, Portugal, and the nations of Latin America and the Caribbean, making it one of the principal multilateral forums connecting Iberian-heritage countries across three continents. Turkey's accession to observer standing — announced on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly's high-level week — places Ankara alongside a bloc with which it has historically maintained limited institutional ties.

The Ministry's statement offered no further detail on specific areas of cooperation Turkey intends to pursue, nor on any conditions attached to the observer arrangement.
