There’s a surprising diversity of short coastal and inland routes within the Sovereign Base Areas on Cyprus that suit backpackers seeking quiet trails, birdlife and historic landmarks.
Akrotiri Peninsula Coastal Circuit – A gentle 8-12 km loop links the Akrotiri Salt Lake, Lady’s Mile beach and the Akrotiri Point lighthouse. Expect low cliffs, sandy stretches and prime winter birdwatching around the salt pans (flamingos and waders). The path is mostly flat with intermittent rocky sections; footwear with decent grip and sun protection are recommended.
Salt Lake to Episkopi Ridge – A moderate 10-15 km route climbs from the wetland edge toward the Episkopi cliffs, offering panoramic views over the southern coastline and the eastern Mediterranean. Sections of exposed trail can be narrow; go early in the day to avoid heat and to catch migrating raptors and seabirds in spring and autumn.
Dhekelia Eastern Coast Walks – The Dhekelia SBA includes long, quieter coastal stretches east of Larnaca where sandy bays alternate with rocky coves and isolated fortification ruins. Day hikes of 6-14 km can be stitched together between small beaches and grazing land, with opportunities to explore seaside flora and marine vistas. Some shoreline paths are informal and may cross agricultural plots.
Inland Farm Tracks and Village Loops – Both SBAs contain agricultural lanes and dirt tracks that thread between fields and small settlements. These are ideal for easy multi-stop backpacks of 10-20 km, combining local encounters, seasonal crops and low-traffic roads. Use a local map or GPS to avoid private property and active military installations.
Navigation and access – Trails are sparsely waymarked. Carry an offline map or GPX route and a charged phone. Some areas are subject to military restrictions or temporary closures; check the Sovereign Base Areas Administration website or local notices before setting out. Identification may be requested at checkpoints.
Practical advice – Hydration, sun protection and layered clothing are imperative in summer and shoulder seasons. Start early to maximize cooler hours and wildlife activity. Pack out waste, respect nesting birds and stay off fenced or signed-off areas. Local buses and taxis can serve trailheads, but service is limited in rural spots so plan transport in advance.
